April 27 - vs. Inferno

Coming to the fields on Monday night to play the earlier rained out game, temperature dropping and the clouds coming in, the Purple Lightning girls were ready to build on their renewed momentum. Would the cold weather prevent them from doing so? Or is it Lightning weather?

1st Inning
Tess in to pitch to start us off. Coming off her great pitching performance from the last game, Tess didn't disappoint as she struck out the first 2 Inferno batters that came to the plate. She walked the 3rd batter who managed to steal 2nd. The 5th batter (Jade, who played for asst. coach Taf last season) got up to a full count before Tess peeled off a strike to get the 3rd out.

On their first trips to the plate, the Inferno pitcher walked both Janessa and Gabby. Tess was up next and Janessa and Gabby advanced with a successful steal. Tess got a hit that bounced through the infield and got on base, and Janessa and Gabby came home. Kelsey hit a hard grounder through infield for a double, bringing Tess across the plate. On her turn, Alli hit a ball down the 1st base line, but the 1st baseman was able to collect the ball and beat Alli to the bag getting the out. After getting up to a full count, Yazmine walked and put Lightning runners on 1st and 2nd. Hylah was up next and connected sending a fast grounder down the 1st base line for a double, bringing Kelsey and Yazmine home. Sara came up to bat with 1 out and Hylah at 2nd. Sara hit the ball, and Hylah took off for 3rd. The 1st baseman was able to make the catch on the fly and raced across to 2nd to beat Hylah (who didn't tag up) to the bag for the double play and the 3rd out of the inning.

Inferno 0 - Purple Lightning 5

2nd Inning
Tess back in to pitch in the 2nd. The 1st batter was hit by a wild pitch for a walk. Tess walked the 2nd batter too, putting Inferno runners on 1st and 2nd. On the 3rd batter, a passed ball got the runners moving, but after building up to full count, Tess was able to strike the batter out. The 4th batter walked as well after getting up to full count, loading the bases. Tess got the 5th batter swinging and struck her out, but a walk on the next batter brought one of the Inferno girls home. Then, Tess settled in for the 7th batter and struck her out to move the game into the 2nd half of the inning.

Caitlin was up 1st to start up the 2nd. She hit the ball towards the 2nd baseman. The 2nd baseman attempted to catch it, but it tipped off of her glove and Caitlin got on base. Erin came up to bat and hit the ball to Jade at short stop, Jade made the throw to 1st getting Erin out. The pitcher walked Maia and after successful steals by Caitlin, Purple Lightning had runners on 1st and 3rd. Alexis came to the plate and hit the ball. Caitlin started for home, the ball bounced high, but the pitcher was able to catch it. She tried to get Caitlin out at home, but the catcher couldn't hold on to it and Caitlin scored. After getting up to full count on Janessa, the pitcher was able to get her to swing for the strike out. On her next turn, Gabby sent one into the outfield for a single, loading the bases. Then, Tess hit a grounder that went straight to the 2nd baseman who was able to field the ball and make the throw to 1st for the last out of the inning.

Inferno 1 - Purple Lightning 6

3rd Inning
Kelsey came in to pitch in the 3rd. The cold weather made it a little difficult for Kelsey to warm up and she walked the 1st 2 batters. With runners on 1st and 2nd, the 3rd batter hit one to the outfield for a single, but the runner on 2nd turned the corner and made it home. The 4th batter (Jade) came up to the plate and on a passed ball, the runners made their move. Hylah tried to make the throw, but the steal was successful. Runners on 2nd and 3rd and the count at 2 and 2, Jade made contact and sent it deep into the outfield for a home run, clearing the bases and scoring 3. The next batter was able to connect for a single. The next batter got up to full count and hit a grounder down the 1st base line, but Gabby was able to field the ball and touch 1st for the out. The Inferno runner was able to steal her way into scoring position, but Kelsey was able to strike out the next batter for the 2nd out. The next batter walked, putting runners on 1st and 3rd. But Kelsey found her groove again and was able to strike the 9th batter out, shutting down the Inferno rush in the 3rd.

Trailing by 5 in the 3rd inning, the Inferno knew they needed to put up some defense to stay in this game. The pitcher started by giving Kelsey 1st base on a walk. She stole 2nd base when Alli came to the plate. Alli hit one past the 3rd baseman for a single. With Yazmine next up, Alli went for 2nd. The Inferno catcher tried to throw her down at 2nd but Alli made it, and Kelsey took off for home and scored. With Alli on the move, Yazmine popped one up and got on when the Inferno infield missed the catch. Purple Lightning runners now on 1st and 3rd. The pitcher walked Hylah on her next trip up, but on an earlier passed ball, Alli was able to come home. With Yazmine successful on her steal, Lightning now had runners on 1st and 3rd. Sara was up next and with a fast grounder that got past the 1st baseman, Yazmine was able to come home. The Inferno pitcher was able to gather herself for a strike out on Caitlin, but a walk on Erin loaded the bases. The pitcher got up to full count on Maia, but wound up giving her the walk, which brought Hylah in to score. Regaining the rhythm she had when Caitlin was up, the Inferno pitcher got the out on Alexis, but Janessa, after getting to full count, sent a high fly ball out to right field that brought Sara and Erin home. Gabby walked next to load the bases. Tess hit one through the infield that sent the Lightning girls running and Maia scored. But when Caitlin was held up at 3rd, Gabby was caught off base turning the corner at 2nd by the Inferno 2nd baseman who tagged Gabby for the 3rd out. The Inferno defense stopped our rush, but with 7 runs in the inning, the damage was done.

Inferno 5 - Purple Lightning 13

4th Inning
The Inferno offense had their work cut out for them in the 4th trailing by 8. Kelsey back in to pitch. Kelsey walked the 1st batter. The 2nd batter hit a grounder down 1st base line to Tess. Tess fielded the ball and tagged 1st for the out. The runner on base advanced to 2nd. The cold started to take it's toll on Kelsey as walks on the next 2 batters loaded the bases. Kelsey was able to find her pitch enough to strike out the next batter for the 2nd out of the inning. Jade - of the home run in the 3rd inning fame - was up next. A wild pitch by Kelsey, hit Jade for a walk, bringing 1 run in (I swear Jade, we didn't tell her to hit you :-) ). The 6th batter hit a grounder to Yazmine at 2nd base. She was able to field the ball and make the throw to Tess at 1st for the out, holding the Inferno to 1 run in the inning.

Leading us off in the 4th, Kelsey sent a fast grounder down the 3rd base line for a double. Alli was next and she was able to connect sending it on the bounce to the Inferno short stop. The short stop made the throw to 1st, for the 1st out. On her next trip to the plate, Yazmine also got a hit for a single, but the overthrow at 1st brought Kelsey home. Hylah connected as well for a single. Continuing the string of hits, Sara made contact, but this time it went high and the pitcher was able to make the catch for the 2nd out. Caitlin got up to full count, but the Inferno pitcher got her to swing for the strike out, ending the 4th inning.

Inferno 6 - Purple Lightning 14

5th Inning
With a commanding lead, all the Purple Lightning girls had to do was get the outs to close the show. Kelsey was back in to pitch. Still reeling from the weather, Kelsey walked the 1st batter. The 2nd batter hit a fast grounder through the infield to get on base. The 3rd batter hit a fast grounder to Gabby at short stop, but with the overthrow at 1st, the runner made it to first and the lead runner made it home. Kelsey gathered herself and struck out the 4th batter, but a walk on the 5th batter loaded the bases. A walk on the next batter brought another Inferno runner across the plate. Once again, Kelsey dug deep to get the strike out on the 7th batter. But the next batter got a piece of the ball. Luckily it went down the 1st base line to Sara who was able to tag the base for the 3rd out of the inning. With Purple Lightning in the lead, the game was called.

Final Score
Inferno 8 - Purple Lightning 14

Game Ball
It was a very cold night on the field that night. Despite the conditions, there was good action going on out there, but for her consistent hitting performance in the game, Hylah was awarded the game ball. Good job Purple Lightning!

April 25 - @ Rock Stars

On Saturday, April 25th, the Lightning girls took to the field to try to bounce back from the loss in their last outing against the CV Giants. Although it wasn't a huge loss, it exposed some weaknesses in the Lighting game that needed to be addressed. The girls came early to work out those kinks as well as to try to incorporate some new things to try out against today's opponents, the Rock Stars.

1st Inning
Coming up to bat first, and setting the tone for the game, Janessa connected and sent one out to right field for a double. She was able to advance to 3rd on Gabbys turn. Unfortunately the Rock Star pitcher was able to get Gabby to swing and struck her out. She followed this up with a walk on Tess and after getting it to full count, was able to strike Kelsey out on her first trip to the plate. Alli was next and she was able to connect and send a fast grounder down the 3rd base line. The Rock Star on 3rd fielded the ball and threw to 1st, but the 1st baseman missed the catch and Alli was safe and Janessa scored, putting Purple Lightning on the board. Sara was next and Alli started to work herself around the bases. But 1 run would be all that they would give us as the Rock Star pitcher was able to strike Sara out.

Tess started off at pitcher. The 1st batter bunted the ball and, on the bounce, Tess was able to reel it in, but the throw to 1st missed it's mark and the Rock Stars were able to put a runner on. On the 2nd batter, the runner on base was able to get around to third and put herself into scoring position. Tess struck the batter out for the 1st of the inning. The next pitch went wild and hit the next batter, putting runners on 1st and 3rd. Tess put another 3 over the plate for the 2nd out of the inning, but not before the runner on 1st was able to advance to 2nd. On the next batter, a pitch got past Hylah and the runners were on the move. 1 run scored before Hylah could get the ball back to Tess covering home and the game was tied. This batter as well as the next both walked and the bases were loaded. It was time to try a new play. On the next pitch, the runners took a big lead, Janessa snuck back to 3rd base and Hylah quickly got the ball back to Tess. Tess paying attention to the 3rd base runner caught her napping as she quickly threw the ball to Janessa to pick her off at 3rd and got the 3rd out of the inning.

Purple Lightning 1 - Rock Stars 1

2nd Inning
Hylah was up 1st in the 2nd inning and she repeated Janessa's opening with a hit to 3rd base. The throw didn't get to 1st in time and Hylah got on. Erin was up next, Hylah stole her way to 3rd and after getting to full count, Erin took a walk. Maia was walked next, loading the bases. The pitcher was able to get Alexis swinging to strike her out. Yazmine hit a fly ball, it hit the ground right in front of the Rock Star 2nd baseman and caused enough confusion to buy her enough time to get to 1st. On the play, Hylah was able to cross the plate. Back to the top of the lineup and going 2 for 2, Janessa hit a fast grounder through the infield, but this time the Rock Star defense was ready and got the out on Janessa at 1st, but not before Erin came in for the score. Gabby's next turn saw her bouncing one back to the pitcher and the pitcher made the throw to 1st to get Gabby out and shutting the Lightning down for the inning.

Tess came in to pitch again and she alternated strike outs and walks on the 1st 4 batters. 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd. On the next batter, the runners stole to advance to 2nd and 3rd. On a bad throw back to the pitcher, the door opened for the Rock Stars and the runners made a break for it. 1 run scored as the Lighting defense were scrambling to regain control of the ball. In the excitement, the throw to 2nd went wild allowing the other runner to cross the plate. The batter was eventually walked and a strike out on the next batter closed it out. But with 2 runs, the score was tied again at the end of the 2nd.

Purple Lightning 3 - Rock Stars 3

3rd Inning
Tess came up to bat 1st in the 3rd. Tess connected, but on the bounce, the 2nd baseman was able to grab it and make the throw to 1st for the out. Kelsey was next and popped it up. Again, the 2nd baseman went for it, but this time, missed the catch and Kelsey was safe on 1. Alli came up next and she was the 3rd Lightning batter in a row to hit off the Rock Star pitcher, unfortunately it was a fly ball and the short stop was able to make the catch for the 2nd out. Sara came up to bat next. Looking a little nervous, Sara was off balance during this trip to the plate and the pitcher was able to make her swing, striking her out for the 3rd out of the inning.

Kelsey came in to pitch in the 3rd. The 1st batter hit a grounder to Alli at short stop. Making a great play, Alli fielded the ball and made the throw to Gabby at 1st for the out. The 2nd batter was able to connect and sent a fly ball that found a seam between 2nd and right center. Runner was safe at 1st. The next batter came up and the runner stole 2nd. The batter bunted the ball and the Lightning defense pounced, but once the ball was fielded, the runners got to their bases and were safe on 1st and 3rd. With the Rock Stars threatening to score, Kelsey got back to work and struck out the next 2 batters to end the inning.

Purple Lightning 3 - Rock Stars 3

4th Inning
Going shot for shot in each of the previous innings, the Lightning took their turn at bat to try to find a way to break away from the Rock Stars. Hylah came up to bat and sent one into the outfield for a single. Erin came up, but the pitcher sent her back to the dugout for the 1st out. Maia was next and walked and after Alexis got hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded. The next walk on Yazmine brought Hylah home. Janessa, once again, hit a hard grounder, but the Rock Star defense managed to collect it and made the play on Maia (our lead runner) at home for the 2nd out. Gabby, on her next turn, got a huge hit and sent it out to deep right center for a triple, brining 3 runs home. Tess came back to the plate. She hit a hard grounder past the 2nd baseman and Gabby took off for home. Tess got on base and Gabby scored. The pitcher seemed to lose her rhythm as she then walked both Kelsey and Alli and loaded the bases. Sara came back up and this time noticeably shook her earlier nervousness to connect and send one through the Rock Star infield for a single, but both Tess and Kelsey came home to score. Hylah was walked on her next trip and the bases were loaded once again. Erin came back in and got a hit herself, but unfortunately the Rock Star defense was able to beat her to 1st, getting the out and forcing the side change.

Kelsey back in at pitcher. Kelsey started us off by striking the 1st batter out. The 2nd batter bunted the ball, but charging, Janessa was able to field the bunt and make the throw to Yazmine covering 1st for the out. The next batter bunted as well, but this time the throw went over Yazmine and the runner was safe. Erin, making a great play with the perfect backup, prevented the runner from getting any more on the play. The 4th was up and the runner on 1st stole to 2nd. The batter sent one to right field and the ball hit the ground. Runner was safe on 1 and the runner on 2 was able to come around for the score. The 5th batter hit a fast grounder to Yazmine at 2nd and she quickly made the throw to Gabby at 1st for the 3rd out of the inning. Seems like the Rock Stars didn't have an answer this time.

Purple Lightning 10 - Rock Stars 4

5th Inning
Maia up to bat 1st in the inning. Maia got a hit and sent it to the 2nd baseman. The 2nd baseman was able to pick it up and make the throw to 1st for the out. The pitcher walked both Alexis and Yazmine. Janessa hit one to right field, advancing the runners. As she rounded 1st, the Rock Star defense threatened to throw her out at 2nd. Janessa turned back and they tried to throw her out at 1st. The throw went wild and Janessa turned around to make a break for 2nd again. Alexis and Yazmine came home and Janessa made it to 3rd. Next, Gabby popped one up, but the infield missed the catch and she was able to make it on base. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Tess hit a high fly ball and the runners took off. The 2nd baseman made the catch and was able to beat Gabby back to 1st with the throw to get the double play and the last out of the inning.

Tess came back in to pitch determined. The 1st batter walked and, behind by 6, the Rock Stars needed to put some points on the board to stay alive. The runner stole her way around to 3rd base. But the exercise was pointless as Tess brought the heat (or the Lightning, I should say) to strike the next 3 batters out in a row, shutting the door on the Rock Stars and closing the show decisively.

Final Score
Purple Lightning 12 - Rock Stars 4

Game Ball
Everyone elevated their game this time around, but the game ball was awarded to Tess for her stellar pitching performance. Great job girls!

April 23 - @ CV Giants

We had a long layoff again before this game as no games were scheduled during Spring Break. The Purple Lightning girls took the field today hosted by the CV Giants and had only one question in mind. Can Lightning strike 3 times in a row?

1st Inning
Leading us off, Janessa got hit by a pitch and took a walk. She stole her way to 3rd base as Gabby was building up to full count. The pitcher threw a strike on the next pitch to send Gabby back to the dugout. Tess came up next and hit one just out of the dirt into the outfield and getting on base, brining Janessa home. Kelsey came up to bat and Tess stole 2nd, but the Giants' pitcher got three over to strike her out. Alli was next and Tess stole 3rd. Alli walked, putting runners on 1st and 3rd. Sara came up to bat and Alli stole 2nd, putting our girls into scoriing position. But the pitcher, sensing the scoring threat, got Sara to swing and managed to strike her out, holding Purple Lighting to 1 run in the inning.

Kelsey started us off at pitcher. Trying to find her pitch, Kelsey walked the 1st batter. She managed to strike out the 2nd batter, but not before the runner worked her way to 2nd base. Kelsey walked the next batter and with a successful steal by the runner on 2nd, the Giants had runners on 1st and 3rd. Another couple of walks later and the Giants put 2 on the board, gaining the lead. the 7th batter connected with a good pitch and the ball took a bounce that Kelsey was able to quickly recover. She started to make the throw to 1st, but quickly changed her mind, turned and got the out on the runner coming home preventing the score. The next batter got a hit, but it popped up and, making the 2nd decisive, defensive play in a row, Kelsey again made the catch for the 3rd out of the inning.

Purple Lightning 1 - CV Giants 2

2nd Inning
Behind by 1 at the top of the 2nd, it was time for the Lightning girls to try to mount an offense. Hylah came up to bat and was struck out by the Giants' pitcher. Caitlin took a walk to get on base. On Maia's turn at bat, Caitlin took off for 2nd and was almost thrown out by an alert Giants' catcher, but she beat the ball to the base and was safe. In quick succession the pitcher was able to strike out both Maia and Alexis, putting a damper on the Lightning's attempt to get an offensive rhythm going.

Kelsey came in to pitch the 2nd inning. The 1st batter walked. The next batter hit a fast grounder through the Lightning infield into right field and, in a repeat of her game ball winning play, Caitlin collected the ball and quickly threw it to Gabby at 1st to get the out on the runner, but, in all the excitement, the runner on base was able to cross the plate for 1 run. The 3rd batter walked and got on base. Kelsey found her pitch on the next batter and was able to strike her out for the 2nd in the inning. But she was having a tough time on the day and walked the next Giants batter. With a successful steal to 2nd and runners now in scoring position, the next batter hit a fly ball towards foul territory and Gabby, making a great play on the ball, ran toward the fence and made the catch for the 3rd out of the inning and held the Giants to only 1 run in the inning.

Purple Lightning 1 - CV Giants 3

3rd Inning
Coming into the 3rd, the Lightning girls were trying to find an answer to the Giants' defense, but they threw us for a loop when they put in a new pitcher. Erin came up to bat and she was walked. The pitcher walked Janessa on her turn, putting runners on 1st and 2nd. This new pitcher didn't seem to have our number like the last one, but she still was able to strike Gabby out on her trip to the plate. Tess was next and when she made contact with what looked like a powerful hit, the runners took off. Unfortunately the ball popped up and the Giants' 1st baseman made the catch on the fly ball for the out, then was able to beat Janessa back to 1st base getting the double play and retiring the side.

Tess came in this time to relieve Kelsey at pitcher. The 1st batter walked and got on base. She then stole 2nd and the next batter hit a high fly ball. Gabby, on another great play, called the ball and made the catch for the out. The 3rd batter came to the plate and the runner on 2nd stole 3rd. A pitch got past Hylah at catcher and the runner started for home. Hylah was able to get to the ball, but was not able to make it back to the plate and the runner scored. Cranking it up a notch, Tess was able to strike out the 3rd batter and was able to follow it up by striking out the next batter closing it out and holding the Giants to 1 in the inning.

Purple Lightning 1 - CV Giants 4

4th Inning
Trailing by 3 in the 4th and time running short, things were starting to look bleak for team Purple Lightning. Kelsey was walked and got on base. She then stole her way around to 3rd. Alli walked too and was also able to steal 2nd. Sara, on her turn, connected and sent it to right center field. This looked like the hit we needed. The outfielder put her glove out for the catch and the ball headed straight for it. The ball bounced out and our hopes were still alive, but on the bobble, the outfielder had a chance for a 2nd attempt and this time caught it and Sara was out, sending the runners back to their bases. Hylah then walked to load the bases. Caitlin came up and was struck out by the pitcher for the 2nd out of the inning. The pitcher then walked Maia, bringing Kelsey home. But just as the Lightning were getting back into the game, the pitcher was able to get 3 past Alexis for the 3rd out .

Tess came back in to pitch the 4th inning and started out by walking the 1st 2 Giants batters. Time ran out as the 3rd batter came to the plate and since the home team was ahead, the game was called by the umpire.

Final Score
Purple Lightning 2 - CV Giants 4

Game Ball
So, the Lightning couldn't extend their streak to 3 and stay undefeated, but with her heads up playing and effort throughout the game, Gabby was awarded the game ball. Good job Gabby - 30 cool points go to you!

April 11 - vs. Soul Sisters

After a long week between games, since our 2nd scheduled game was rained out, Team Purple Lightning took the field hosting the Soul Sisters. This was a team that was rumored to have had a dismal game in their first outing this season, but you wouldn't have guessed it by the way they gave us a run for our money.

1st Inning
Kelsey was our starting pitcher today. Trying to find her groove, she brought it to full count on the 1st batter. Losing control on the next pitch, Kelsey hit the batter and the batter took a walk. The 2nd batter walked too and with an earlier successful steal, there were runners on 1st and 3rd. On the next batter, the runner at 1st ran for 2nd. Hylah tried to throw her down, but the runner was safe and with this action the runner at 3rd made a break for home. Crossing the plate, the Soul Sisters scored the 1st run of the day. The 4th and the 5th batter walked and the bases were loaded. Kelsey settled in to strike out the next batter. The next batter hit a fly ball to Alli at Short Stop and she made the catch, getting the 2nd out of the inning. Having found her rhythm in the 1st, Kelsey was able to string 3 more together for another strike out, holding the Soul Sisters to 1 in the 1st.

Leading off for the Purple Lightning, Yazmine took a walk. On her at bat, Janessa connected and sent a fast grounder down the 3rd base side. The Sisters' chose to pick off our lead runner and got the out on Yazmine at 2nd. Tess came up to bat and Janessa successfully stole 2nd. Tess hit a single and Janessa was able to come home. Kelsey was up next and she walked, putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Coming to the plate next, Gabby hit the ball, but the Sisters' defense was able to get her out at 1st, but our runners advanced to scoring position. On her next turn, Alli walked, loading the bases. Hylah came up to bat, but the pitcher was able to strike her out holding us to 1 run.

Soul Sisters 1 - Purple Lightning 1

2nd Inning
Kelsey pitching again for the 2nd inning, started off almost exactly like the 1st. Full count on the 1st batter turned into a walk. The 2nd batter also walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd. The 3rd batter hit one out to Left Center, but the ball was dropped and 1 run crossed home. The 4th batter came up to the plate, but after the 2nd base stole 3rd, the Sould Sisters had runners on 1st and 3rd. Kelsey struck her out for the 1st of the inning. The next batter hit the ball through the infield. The runner on 3rd was able to cross the plate, but Janessa got the tag on the incoming runner at 3rd. Another grounder brought another Soul Sister home. But on the next hit, Janessa was able to collect the ball and deliver it to Tess at 1st for the 3rd out of the inning, putting an end to the Soul Sisters' increasing lead.

Down 2 in the bottom of the 2nd, Sara came to the plate and hit one out to the outfiled getting on base. Caitlin was up next, but the pitcher strung 3 together to send her back to the dugout. Alexis came up to bat. On a dropped ball, Sara took off for 2nd, the catcher quickly recovered and was able to make the throw to 2nd, getting Sara out. Alexis tried to keep the Lightning alive in the inning, but with the momentum on her side, the Sisters' pitcher put 3 together to close it out, holding the Lightning to 0 in the inning.

Soul Sisters 4 - Purple Lightning 1

3rd Inning
After a great effort in the first 2 innings Kelsey was replaced by Tess at the rubber. She made quick work of the 1st batter as she struck her out for the 1st of the inning. The 2nd batter proved to be a little tougher as she hit a grounder through our infield. Trying to get her out at 1st, the Lightning right fielder overthrew 1st base and the runner was able to get to 2nd. After stealing 3rd, the 3rd batter hit a short grounder to Tess, the runner on 3rd base took off for home, but Tess went for the sure out by throwing to Kelsey at 1st and the runner scored. The next batter was a bookend strike out for Tess as she held the Soul Sisters to 1 in the inning.

Feeling the pressure to mount a comeback, the Purple Lightning took their turn at bat. Maia was 1st, but the Sisters' pitcher was still in her groove and was able to strike Maia out. She was determined to make us work for it. Janessa came up next, but she was struck out too. This pitcher was proving to be a challenge. Tess came up to bat. Yazmine went to steal 2nd, but with the overthrow was able to get to scoring position. Tess connected and sent it to Left Center, but the Sisters' outfielder was able to make the catch and get the 3rd out of the inning, keeping us scoreless for the 2nd inning in a row.

Soul Sisters 5 - Purple Lightning 1

4th Inning
Tess was back at Pitcher for the 4th. 1st batter walked then stole her way to 3rd. The 2nd batter also walked, putting runners on 1st and 3rd. The next batter hit a grounder down the 3rd base line, but Janessa was able to pick it up and make the throw to Kelsey at 1st, but the runner at 3rd was able to make it home extending the Sisters' lead. Tess found her pitch again with the next batter and was able to strike her out for the 2nd of the inning. Then one of the runners left her base early drawing the 3rd out of the inning.

Kelsey was walked to lead us off in the 4th. On her next trip to the plate, Gabby was able to connect driving it through the infield, but the Sister at 2nd base was able to get Kelsey out, but doing so, let Gabby take 1st. Alli was also able to connect with the ball, but it was a fly ball that the pitcher was able to reel in for the 2nd out of the inning. Then, trying to get the double play on Gabby at 1st, the pitcher overthrew 1st base and Gabby took off and made it all the way to 3rd base. Hylah was up next, she hit a single that brought Gabby home. Sara came up to bat and took a walk. On her turn, Caitlin was also able to connect with the ball to move the runners, but keepin their composure, the Soul Sisters were able to get the ball to take out Hylah, our lead runner, at 3rd to close out the inning. Even though, we were held to 1 run in the inning, the Lightning girls were able to break their 2 inning drought. It was now up to our defense to keep us in the game.

Soul Sisters 6 - Purple Lightning 2

5th Inning
Tess came back in to pitch in the 5th. We needed to hold the other team if we were going to mount a comeback. With incredible determination, Tess gave us exactly what we needed. 1st batter - strike out. 2nd batter - strike out. 3rd batter - strike out. Making quick work of the Soul Sisters' offense, Tess shut them down before they knew what hit them. Great job Tess!

Coming into the 5th down by 4, the Lightning girls gave it everything they had to claw their way to the lead. Alexis got hit by a pitch and walked. Maia walked next, putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Soul Sisters 6 - Purple Lightning 9

6th Inning
Now behind, the Soul Sisters had their work cut out for them as it was now their turn to try to regain the lead. Kelsey came back in at pitcher. After the 1st pitch, the 1st batter left the field with a mysterious injury. Rather than take the automatic out, she came back up hoping for Kelsey to not get the strike out. Staying calm, Kelsey got the easy out. The 2nd batter sent one to the outfield. As she was rounding 1st base, Maia was able to get the ball in to Yazmine who then turned around and forced the runner back to 1st. 3rd batter at the plate. The runner goes for 2nd, but with the overthrow was able to get to 3rd. The 4th batter connected with the ball. Unfortunately for the Soul Sisters, Kelsey, with a lot of time, was able to field the ball and make the throw to Gabby at 1st to close the game.

Final Score

Game Ball
It wasn't pretty, but it was a great come-from-behind victory for the Purple Lightning girls. The game ball was awarded to Caitlin, who made a great play in the last inning to hold off the Soul Sisters' attempt at a comeback. The honorable mention went to Tess for her great pitching performance. Great job girls!

Opening Day - April 4 - @ Chili Peppers

So, our opening day was Saturday, April 4.

The day started off with the early morning 'Picture Day'. We showed up at the fields at 10am to take our team pictures. It was great to finally see everyone in their uniforms, looking sharp. Also, it was great to see the other teams getting ready for the 1st day of the season. Plus the little ones were playing during our pictures and that's always great to watch.

After we got our pictures out of the way, we picked up our fundrasing orders and went our separate ways until game time - 3pm. We played the Chili Peppers for our first game of the season.

1st Inning
Leading off, Janessa walked to get on base, then Alli hit a single and got on base as well. They both stole their way into scoring position. Tess came up to bat and one of the pitches got past the catcher and Janessa tried, but was thrown out at home. Alli managed to make it to 3rd on the play. On the next pitch, the Chili Peppers' pitcher managed to get the last strike past Tess to get the 2nd out of the inning. Kelsey came up to bat and was eventually walked, putting runners on 1st and 3rd. Gabby walked and the bases were loaded. Hylah was next and was hit by a stray pitch bringing Alli in and putting us on the board. The pitcher was then able to strike Sara out to close the side.

Tess took her spot at the rubber. The 1st batter got a piece of the ball, the grounder went directly back to Tess and throwing quickly to Kelsey at 1st got the 1st out. Tess made quick work of the 2nd batter, striking her out. The 3rd batter walked to get on base, then stole her way to 2nd. The 4th batter was also able to connect and hit a grounder through our infield to left center for a double, bringing in 1 run for the Chili Peppers and also getting them on the board. The 5th batter walked, putting runners on 1st and 3rd. The 6th batter then came up and was able to hit a single, the Lightning tried for the out at 1st, but didn't get it and the runner at 3rd was able to score. The 7th batter hit the ball, but the Lightning defense was able to get the ball back to Hylah at catcher to take out the lead runner at home, holding the Chili Peppers to 2 runs in the inning.

Purple Lightning 1 - Chili Peppers - 2

2nd Inning
The 2nd inning was pretty uneventful for either side. Erin came up to bat, but was walked. Maia and Caitlin were next and both struck out. Alexis was hit by a pitch and took a walk putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Yazmine hit a grounder to the Chili Peppers short stop who made the throw to 1st getting Yazmine out at 1st, holding us to 1 point so far for the game.

Kelsey was tapped to pitch in the 2nd. The 1st batter hit a single to get on base. The 2nd batter connected and sent the ball into the outfield. After some confusion, the Lightning outfield was able to get the ball back in holding the runners at 1st and 3rd. The 3rd batter connected as well, this time sending it out to right field causing a little commotion out there again. The Chili Peppers were able to get 1 run across the plate and advance the other runners to 2nd and 3rd. Regaining her composure, Kelsey managed to strike out the 4th batter. The next batter walked to load the bases, but unfazed Kelsey strung together 3 more strikes on the next Chili Pepper batter. The 7th batter hit a fly ball to Gabby at short stop and catching the ball, Gabby was able shut the Chili Peppers down for the inning.

Purple Lightning 1 - Chili Peppers - 3

3rd Inning
Down 2 points in the 3rd, Purple Lightning came up to bat. Back at the top of the order, Janessa hit a single and with a missed throw to 1st, got on base, then she stole her way to 2nd. Alli and Tess both took a walk and the bases were loaded. At her turn at bat, Kelsey hit a single, bringing in Janessa. Gabby walked, bringing in Alli. The pitcher was then able to get 3 strikes past Hylah for the 1st out of the inning. Then a series of walks on Sarah, Erin, Maia, Caitlin, Alexis and Yazmine and Gabby and Kelsey scoring left us with bases loaded and 8 runs so far in the inning. Janessa came back up to bat and this time ripped one out to the outfield for a double, bringing 2 more runs in. Tess came up to bat and Yazmine at 3rd strategically left 3rd base early. This with an out on an earlier steal attempt by Caitlin, closed out the 3rd inning for Purple Lightning.

Tess was back at pitcher for the 3rd. The 1st batter hit the ball straight to Yazmine at 2nd who made the throw to Sarah at 1st for the out. The 2nd batter walked. Tess struck out the 3rd batter, but not before the runner on base was able to steal her way to scoring position. The next batter walked putting runners on 1st and 3rd. The 5th batter got on base with a single, bringing a runner in and the 6th batter was able to hit a double bringing 2 more across the plate. The 7th batter walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd. The 8th batter connected, but Tess was able to field the ball and get it to Sarah at 1st for the 3rd out.

Purple Lightning 11 - Chili Peppers - 6

4th Inning
Leading for the first time in the game, the Lightning came to bat to try to extend their lead. Alli was up first and walked. Tess got a base hit and Kelsey hit a grounder to the short stop and, with the missed catch at 1st, was safe and once again, the bases were loaded. Both Gabby and Hylah walked, bringing in 2 more for our side. Sarah hit one to the infield on the 3rd base side. She made it on base since the Chili Peppers opted to go after our lead runner (Kelsey) who was heading home. Kelsey wasn't as lucky this time and they were able to get the out. Erin was up next and took a walk, bringing Gabby home. Then, Maia hit the ball. Runners were on the move and Hylah started for home. Once again, the Chili Peppers defense went for the lead runner and went 2 for 2 as they made their play. Caitlin came up to bat, but the pitcher was able to get 3 over for the strike out and the 3rd out of the inning.

Kelsey came back to pitch for the 4th. Making quick work of the 1st batter, Kelsey notched the 1st out of the inning. 2nd and 3rd batters both walked, but Kelsey was able to get it back by striking out the 4th Chili Pepper batter. On the next few batters, the Chili Peppers tried to mount a comeback. 5th batter connected, bringing in 1. 6th batter hit one out to left field, scoring 2. 7th brought another runner across the plate with a single. The 8th batter walked and the 9th batter connected as well, bringing 2 more home and closing the distance. With this string of action, the Chili Peppers whittled the Lightning lead to 2 points. The Chili Peppers then tried to squeeze out a couple more runs by calling in a bunt. Kelsey and Tess were on top of it though and Kelsey was able to field the ball and toss it to Tess for the last out of the inning and the game.
